A 5.9 magnitude earthquake hits Central Virginia around 2:00 Tuesday afternoon, sending tremors that were reportedly felt as far north as Canada, south to Atlanta, Georgia, and west to Indiana and Michigan.

I live along the eastern seaboard, but I didn't feel anything. My mom did, though.

I can never remember, is 5.9 big?

It's not super big, but it can cause damage.

Anything in the 5 range is considered moderate.

6 is strong

7 is major

Well, that's a pretty darn big quake.

Earthquakes are measured on a logarithmic scale. The base is 10. To give you and idea of the measurements a quake that measured 1.0 would release energy that equaled 6 ounces of TNT. An 8.0 would release energy equal to 6 million tons of TNT.

Considering that we never get Earthquakes here in VA, I say 5.9 is pretty damn big. But really it was nothing much. I don't live too far away from where it was centered, I live in South East VA, and nothing much happened here. Best I can tell there were zero reports of injury and very little structural damage. If anything it was eventful only because we've never gotten anything like that before and because it was felt from Canada to Florida.

I'm in Canada, at the Northern limit of where they said you could feel it (Ottawa). I didn't feel a thing, but my wife did. She thought she had vertigo, but then noticed the wind chimes (that we have indoors, cause I hate the noise) started vibrating too.

She called me and I was all "You're crazy!"

I live in north Georgia, didn't feel anything. I was out all day, so I didn't even know the earthquake happened until tonight.

I live in NC, not too far from the Virginia state line. My mom was in a meeting at our local high school, and she said the floor of the auditorium "rolled."
